তিনি তার বড় ছেলেকে কিছু লাঠি আনতে এবং লাঠিগুলো একটি বান্ডিলে বাঁধতে বলেন। বান্ডিল ভাঙতে বললেন। বড় ছেলে বান্ডিল ভাঙতে পারেনি। অন্য দুই ভাইয়ের ক্ষেত্রেও তাই হয়েছে।
তারপর বৃদ্ধ লোকটি বান্ডিলটি খুলে তার প্রতিটি ছেলেকে ভাঙার জন্য একটি করে লাঠি দিল। সবাই লাঠি ভেঙ্গে দিল।
